Äntligen över
Nu går amerikanska folket äntligen till varlurnorna i det mest uppblåsta presidentvalet någonsin. Det talas om ett historiskt val. För egen del är jag snarare övertygad om att 2008 års amerikanska presidentval i sig är ganska betydelselöst. Fram tills för någon halvår sedan såg detta ut att bli ett val där en kandidat faktiskt skulle gå att stödja, låt vara inte med någon större entusiasm, men när valdagen nu är här är jag i vanlig ordning närmast tacksam att jag inte har rösträtt i USA: jag skulle inte med gott samvete kunna rösta på någon av huvudkandidaterna. Mot varandra står en kolerisk populist och en imagefixerad karriärdemagog. Det är ingen hemlighet att jag hade önskat mig att valet stått mellan Rudy Giuliani och Hillary Clinton, men Giuliani visade sig vara en katastrofalt usel kampanjstrateg, och Clinton var realpolitikern som gick upp mot Jesus, en kamp som är nära nog omöjlig att vinna, särskilt om man dessutom ses som etablissemangskandidaten.
Häromdagen konstaterade Johan Norberg att
John McCain is a transformational candidate - because he has transformed himself into everything he used to despise. McCain is an admirable maverick and free trader who has stood up to the bigots and big spenders of the Republican party again and again. But to win the election he is appeasing them now, and this will cost him the election.
Men å andra sidan
that does not mean that I would vote for Barack Obama, the farm bill enthusiast who has promised to turn a recession into world depression by reverting to primitive pro-poverty protectionism. And it doesn´t help that he wants to give trade unions more control over the unorganised and doesn´t care that social security will collapse and bring down the house.
Denna analys kan jag inte annat än instämma helhjärtat i, trots att jag förvisso inte är en riktigt lika radikal marknadsliberal som Norberg.
Båda kandidaterna är katastrofer som väntar på att inträffa. Å andra sidan är Sarah Palin en katastrof som redan har inträffat. Hon personifierar allt det som gått fel i McCains kampanj. Hur imponerad av och entusiastisk för fenomenet Sarah Palin jag än är (se Olofs förträffliga redogörelse här: Jag älskar Sarah Palin), kan jag inte annat än instämma med Christopher Hitchens:
This is what the Republican Party has done to us this year: It has placed within reach of the Oval Office a woman who is a religious fanatic and a proud, boastful ignoramus. Those who despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate of spiritual warfare and demons are not just "people of faith" but theocratic bullies.
McCain hade både erfarenhet och en lång rad sakfrågor, för att inte tala om erfarenheten, på sin sida när spelet började. Nu har han nästan inget av det kvar. Av sakfrågorna bidde det en tumme; erfarenheten har inte hindrat McCain från att visa sanslöst dålligt omdöme. För att tala med Christopher Buckley:
But that was—sigh—then. John McCain has changed. He said, famously, apropos the Republican debacle post-1994, “We came to Washington to change it, and Washington changed us.” This campaign has changed John McCain. It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget “by the end of my first term.” Who, really, believes that? Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis. His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?
Det republikanska partiet behöver ta en lång promenad och meditera över sina synder. Oavsett vem som vinner inatt kommer USA att få en president som från ett vetenskapsperspektiv är oändligt mycket bättre än den sittande administrationen. Men det räcker inte: antiintellektualismen och dumkonservatismen måste med nödvändighet rensas ut. Det är den enda avgörande betydelse det här valet kommer att ha i längden. Det bästa vi kan hoppas på är att Obama vinner — och att han ljuger som en häst travar i sin vänsterretorik. Förhoppningsvis har Johan Norberg rätt:
Obama will govern as a centrist and a lot of people will be disappointed when they see him in action because expectations are so exaggerated and because he is too smart to give in to the anti-trade, anti-business bunch.
But Obama will win again in 2012, because a Republican civil war will rage as diverse forces like the religious right, the national security conservatives and the free-marketeers fight bitterly over the soul of the party. The Republicans will still win the mid-term elections because of discontent with the Democratic Congress, but they won´t be able to unite behind and be enthusiastic about one presidential candidate. Sarah Palin will be crushed in the primaries by some young, urban and modern Republican who makes "change" the center of his campaign.
