Heavy shit

Filed under: Samhällsfilosofi och politk - Dr M @ 2:49 pm

New York Times reports that Iran has opened a heavy-water reactor, just days before the country is supposed to suspend enrichment of uranium. "There are no talks of nuclear weapons in Iran," says President Ahmadinejad, but heavy-water reactors would not be the obvious choice for peacful nuclear power. Instead, these reactors produce lots of Plutonium, the radioactive element used to make nuclear weapons. This is very obviusly a provocation.

Ahmadinejad also says, according to NYT: "We tell the Western countries not to cause trouble for themselves because the Iranian people are determined to take big steps." But Ahmadinejad does not speak for any public oppinion, because Iran is a theocracy, were fundamental democratic rights and institutions are lacking. Ahmadinejad talks about the determination of a mad theocracy very possibly on its way to nuclear weapons. The problem is not Iranian nuclear power, or even Iranian nuclear weapons (though I’d prefere to live without them). The problem is a mad theocracy raging against western democracy. This is why Iran cannot have nuclear facilities.
