Idiocies
I heard on the radio yesterday evening that the largest Muslim organization i Sweden (Sveriges muslimska förbund, 70000 members) demands that Sweden introduce special, islamic laws for muslims. Their demands include, according to leading newspaper Dagens Nyheter, that divorces be approved by an imam, that public schools teach children in separate groups in the subjects of mother tongue and religions and that boys and girls be separated in swimming classes (swimming is part of phys ed in Sweden). They further demand that muslims be granted two extra days off (with pay) per year to celebrate muslim holidays and two hours off each Friday for Friday prayer.
These rediculous demands that muslims be given separate laws really don’t need more analysis than a simple two-word reply: HELL NO!
Sweden is a democratic society, and one of the basic principles of such a societal system is that all individuals are equal in front of the law. Period. That basic principle is not negotiable, be it for muslims, christians, Hare Krishna, physicists or red-heads. As for time off, well, negotiate it with your employers. That’s the way it should work for everyone anyway.
Oh and as for the freedom of religious belief that is put forth as an argument in favor of special laws: One additional reason not to introduce special laws for any religious groups at all is that such rules work in the opposite direction. They will invariably be used to force religious practices on people.
The second idiocy yesterday was the opinion article in Svenska Dagbladet by two social democrates. They try to portray the entire center and right wing in Swedish politics as one big conspiracy, analogous in its workings to the former DDR. It’s just that almost everything they claim to uncover as hidden plots are no more hidden than that you can easily find the information on the websites of the different organizations. Add a few claims that libertarian bloggers are sponsored by business organzations (they are not) and part of a big conspiracy to hide campaign financing. Then add the fact that the social democrats receive enormous contributions from an organzation (the larget labor union) of which many people have no real choice but to be a member, and you end upp with a contribution to debate so laughable that sensible social democtrates litterally rush to distance themselves from their own parliament representatives.
Update 1 May: It seems that the chairman of Sveriges Muslimska Förbund, Mahmoud Aldebe, acted on his own, when demanding separate laws for muslims. Also, there are strong reactions against his demands from other muslim organizations, according to Svenska Dagbladet. Good. Also, Mehmet Kaplan is right when he points out that these idiotic demands shadow much more important questions. The chairman of SMF, however, reveals his agenda when he tries to downplay the letter he wrote:
I don’t demand separate laws for Muslims. I want to adapt our legislation so that the muslim minority will feel safe in our society.
Great! So now he wants Islamic laws to apply to everyone. That really doesn’t make me feel any easier about this.
